Our Life in Amsterdam
We lived in Amsterdam for over a year and to be honest, we miss this city a bit. In general, we can share more positive than negative things.
Who knows, maybe when we decide to settle down and stop travelling around the world, we might come back to Amsterdam again. There are definitely so many cool things to do in Amsterdam and we really enjoyed our time.
Well, we just mentioned our trip around the world and yes we are travelling right now when you are reading this post.
As we mentioned, we lived in Amsterdam for some time and for this reason we had a chance to explore this amazing city in a more detailed version.
Of course, we visited all the classic tourist places, however, we also wanted to share with you our list of Top 5 cool and non-touristy things to do in Amsterdam which are also frequently visited by local people.
Whenever our family or friends visited us in Amsterdam, we tried to show them more of ‘our‘ Amsterdam which we discovered over the year.
Clearly, if you are coming to Amsterdam for a few days, first you should definitely visit the most popular places like the Red Light District, Heineken Experience, Jewish Quarter with Anne Frank House or Rijksmuseum.
However, if you are staying more days and you are a bit bored of doing the same things in Amsterdam, this list can help you.
Top 5 Cool and Non-Touristy Things to do in Amsterdam
1. Cafe Hoppe
We start our cool list of things to do with one of the oldest coffee shops in Amsterdam-Cafe Hoppe.
It was first opened in 1670 and it might seem that you return to the past. Antique wooden furniture, sand on the floor (probably to absorb the liquid or water from the shoes) and good draft beer make this place a must-see destination.
This place is loved by the Dutch themselves and they still frequent it. Even the Dutch Queen visited this Cafe when she was young.
Although Cafe Hoppe is located at one of the main streets in the city, many tourists miss this place since there are a lot of other bars and restaurants around.
The truth is that this is definitely a unique place where you should come for a nice beer and mythical bitterballen.
2. Dappermarkt
If you have already visited the popular market Albert Cuyp and you are a fan of markets in general, this place should be on your list to visit.
Dappermarkt is located in the Oost neighbourhood and from our personal experience, you can find better prices for the same products as in other more popular places.
They offer a variety of fruits, vegetables and spices from all over the world. It is located in a very cosmopolitan neighbourhood and thanks to its vendors of different nationalities you can find practically everything from Dutch cheese to Arabic spices.
Moreover, if you continue to walk to the end of the market, you will find our 3rd cool and non-touristy thing to do in Amsterdam.
3. Brouwerij ‘t IJ
Brouwerij’t IJ is definitely one of our favourite places in Amsterdam and as we mentioned before you can find it just at the end of Dappermarkt.
If you are a beer lover and you want to see classic windmills in Amsterdam, Brouwerij ‘t IJ is the perfect place for you!
Basically, there was a brewery created in the old windmill and as we love beer, we would definitely recommend you to visit this cool place.
Although it is a very popular place by the local people, it is quite outside of the classic tourist routes which makes it a perfect place to enjoy the beer in nice atmosphere.
As it is a brewery, they offer a wide range of beers and you can also opt-in for Tasting Beer option, which gives you the opportunity to try five most popular beers. You can also accompany your beer with some Dutch cheese, salami and other local delicatessens.
It is definitely a special place as there are only a few windmills in Amsterdam. We believe that overall there are three so if you don’t have time to visit popular Zaanse Schans, this is a good option for you to see a classic Dutch windmill.
4. Park Somerlust
Park Somerlust is for us an authentic gem if you want to relax a bit being in the city.
It is located between Oost and Zuid neighbourhood and it is about 10 minutes walk from Amstel Metro/train station.
It is a perfect place for sunny days because it has a green area that directly overlooks the Amstel River. We can assure you that you are probably not going to find any tourists, however, during summer weekends it is full of locals and it becomes an awesome party.
Our tip is to bring a drink or something to eat in case you want to have a picnic although there are several restaurants nearby.
We totally recommend this place if you want to rest from the city.
5. Rent a Boat
Being in Amsterdam, you shouldn’t forget to make a turn in its fantastic canals. It is a classic Amsterdam experience so you can explore the city from a different perspective and see all the houseboats parked on the sides.
Most of the tourist take the classic guided boat tour along the canals of Amsterdam. Yes, we also did it when we came the first time.
However, we found a much cooler option to rent a boat and drive it yourself. It is definitely a fun thing to do in Amsterdam when you can rent your own little boat and go around whenever you want.
The best part is when you see all tourist boats going around the same canals bored from the vocal guidance.
There are several companies from which you can rent a boat in Amsterdam without any problems. The price (September 2019) is around 90 EUR/per boat for 2 hours (usually one boat fits up to 7-9 people).
In reality, if you are a group of five people, you are paying the same price as you would pay for a guided tour for one hour.
But trust us to have your own boat and drive it whenever you want is much more fun!

¿Habeis ya visitado esta bellísima ciudad y queréis hacer cosas diferentes en la ciudad de los canales?
¿No vais por allá ni por fumar ni por el turismo sexual?
Si una de estas preguntas os rondan por la cabeza probablemente estáis en el blog adecuado, sin embargo si os estáis preguntado ¿Donde esta Amsterdam ? Igual os aconsejo mirar en wikipedia 😂😂
Hemos vivido en esta bellísima ciudad casi un año y medio y de hecho un poco la echamos de menos. En general podemos hablar de mas cosas positivas que negativas. Quizás después de nuestro viaje por el mundo podriamos decidirnos en volver ya que en Amsterdam hay un monton de cosas geniales que hacer (ops hemos dicho viaje por el mundo 😜, si quieres saber mas puedes mirar quien somos y nuestra historia).
Después de haber vivido en la capital Holandesa por casi un año y medio hemos decidido escribir una lista de los 5 sitios mas interesantes y no turisticos en Amsterdam y que al maximo vienen frecuentados por los Holandeses.
Siempre que nuestros amigos y familia nos visitaban, ademas de las normales rutas, hemos intentado sorprenderlos con algo que salía de las normales guías o listas de lo que tienes que hacer en Amsterdam.
Claramente si estais solo algunos dias en la capital teneis que visitar sin duda: El Barrio rojo, Museumplein, El Barrio Judio con la Casa de Anne Frank o el mas moderno y movido barrio De Pijp.
Sin embargo si acaso estais mas dias o ya estais aburridos de hacer siempre lo mismo en Amsterdam igual esta lista os puede ayudar.

1. Caffe Hoppe
Empezamos nuestra lista desde uno de los Cafes mas antiguos de Amsterdam el Cafe Hoppe.
Su apertura esta datada al lejanos 1670 y si entráis os parecerá por un segundo hacer un viaje en el pasado. Muebles de madera antiguos, arena en el suelo (pienso para absorber el liquido o el agua de los zapatos cuando se entra) y buena cerveza de tirador hacen de este sitio un destino imperdible.
Es un sitio a lo cual los proprios Holandeses quieren mucho y de hecho muchos siguen frecuentándolo. Tenéis que pensar que la propia Reina cuando era joven estuvo ahi.
Aunque se encuentre en una de las calles centrales de la ciudad muchas veces el normal turista pasa desapercibido ya que alrededor hay un monton de otros bares y restaurantes.
La verdad que es un sitio único donde deberias beber algo y probar sus míticos bitterballen.
2. Dappermarkt
Si ya habeis visitado el famoso y turístico mercado de Albert Cuyp y os gustan los mercados posiblemente este sitio es lo que estais buscando.
Dappermarkt se encuentra El Barrio de Oost (en el este de la ciudad) y se trata de un mercado que a parte los turistas 🤔 no tiene nada que invidiar a los otros mercados de la ciudad.
De hecho por mi experiencia personal a menudo he encontrado mejor precios y ofertas en los productos que venden. Tienen una gama de fruta, verduras y especias mas variegada que los demas.
Se encuentra en un barrio muy cosmopolita y gracias a sus vendedores de diferentes nacionalidades puedes encontrar practicamente de todo, desde quesos holandéses hasta especias árabes o salsas orientales.
Si te interesa visitar mercados y estas un poco cansado de las típicas trampas para turistas quizás este sea tu mercado.
PS: Si estas de visita en el mercado, a pocos pasos tienes una auténtica gema de esta ciudad que es el Parco de Oost. Un sitio muy interesante y perfecto para hacer una pausa o comida. También al final del mercado vas a encontrar nuestra tercera propuesta cool y no turística que hacer en Amsterdam.
3. Brouwerij ‘t IJ
Este es uno de nuestros sitios preferidos en Amsterdam y como os decía antes lo encontráis casi justo al final de Dappermarkt.
¿Estais en Amsterdam y deseáis ver los classicos molinos y ademas os encanta la cervezas?
Brouwerij ‘t IJ es el sitio perfecto para vosotros!
Se trata de un molino a viento en desuso que se convertido en una cervecería artesanal que ofrece cervezas ricas a buen precio.
Aunque es un sitio muy concurrido por los proprio habitantes de la ciudad se encuentra bastante fuera de las clásicas rutas de turismo convertiendolo en un sitio perfecto para disfrutar la tarde.
Además de una amplia oferta de cervezas teneis tambien la opción de hacer un Tasting beer compuesto de 5 variedades, tienen algun rico pica pica para acompañar los tragos.
Hay pocos molinos en Amsterdam, me parece 3 si contamos lo del Nord y si no teneis tiempo de visitar Zaanse Schans esta es una de las mejores opciones.
4. Park Somerlust
Esto para nosotros de funfoodtravelling es un autentica gema si lo que queréis es descansar de la ciudad.
Se encuentra entre El Barrio de Oost y lo de Zuid, mas o menos a 10 min andando de la estación de Amstel (nosotros siempre hemos ido en bici sin embargo me parece que hay una parada mas cercana).
Es un sitio perfecto para los dias soleados porque tiene una zona verde que da directamente al Rio Amstel justo en frente de lo Skyline de la zona financiera de Amsterdam. Os puedo asegurar que no vais a encontrar ningún turista, sin embargo los fines de semanas de verano esta repleto de locales o residentes y parece una autentica fiesta.
Os aconsejo traer de beber o comer si quereis hacer picnic aunque hay varios restaurantes en las cercanias. Recomendado si quereis descansar de la ciudad.
5. Alquilar un barco privado y conducirlo tu mismo
Si estas pensando visitar Amsterdam seguramente tienes en la cabeza hacer una vuelta en sus fantásticos canales. Pasar entre sus casas flotantes, debajo de sus puentes o solo ver la ciudad de otra perspectiva son algunas de las motivaciones que empujan los turistas en hacer tour guiados por esta ciudad .
¿Y si te dijera que puedes conducir tu proprio barco?
Una cosa mas cool y divertida que hacer en Amsterdam es alquilar tu proprio barquito y dar la vuelta de la ciudad con tu familia o tus amigos. Lo mejor de todo sin turistas o mas bien con todos ellos mirándote desde sus aburridos barcos con guía vocal 🤪🔝😜.
Hay varias compañías que alquilan sin muchos problemas y los precios (septiembre 2019) rondan en los 90 EUR por 2 h. En práctica si sois 5 personas, estais pagando el precio de un tour con guía cada uno.
