Let’s discuss in this post how we prepared for our trip around the world with this ultimate backpacking checklist.

Packing, Love or Hate
Well, there are people who hate packing and they usually prepare their luggage at the last minute like the night before. There are also people who love packing and they organize everything weeks before the trip.
We are somewhere in the middle and it much depends on where are we going. When we were going to travel for three weeks in Vietnam, we prepare the luggage a few days before our flight. When we were going to travel the world, we start preparing and packing weeks before our first flight.
Of course, you cannot compare the holidays for a few weeks and a trip around the world. It is obvious that for longer trips, you will always need more preparation and possibly travel checklist.
In general, we also learned how to pack over the years. In the beginning, we carried so many things we never used, and step by step we learned how to properly pack and carry only the things we really need.
In this post, we prepared our ultimate backpacking checklist, what we take with us everywhere regardless of how long the trip is going to be.
Yes, after some time, we realized that there is no difference between packing for one week or a few months.
Our Backpacking Checklist
1. Choose the right Backpack
The one thing which you need to choose carefully is your backpack or luggage.
When we travel around Europe for a long weekend, we definitely go in a small suitcase. This will be the obvious choice as it is perfect luggage for a short trip and you don’t have to pay an extra fee when flying.
On the other hand, when we went to Vietnam for three weeks, a small suitcase was not the best idea. We chose a backpack as we knew we will be travelling around using different transports and carrying a suitcase with wheels is not very convenient.
For our trip around the world, we are using Regatta Survivor Backpack, which turned out to be the best choice for us. Very versatile and durable backpack with rain cover.
Extra Tip: We are also using Plane/Transport cover, so you can put your backpack inside, whenever you travel. It is an amazing thing, it protects your luggage, keep it clean, and you can add a padlock to close everything so its harder to open it.
We also use TSA padlocks specialized for TSA airport screeners which allow inspecting your luggage without damaging the locks.
2. Choose the right shoes
The rights shoes for travelling the world, yeah that is the hard one. We tried many different types of shoes, and we realized that in general, we need 3 pairs of shoes for every trip.
Walking shoes– shoes which you will need almost every day and they need to be very comfortable. We use Skechers with the foam insole(this type for women) which provides great comfort.
Hiking shoes– we are still not united on this topic, we tried a few different types of hiking shoes, but in general, we would recommend Salomon Hiking shoes as we have a good experience with them.
Flip Flops, Sandals -yes you will need them why? If you are travelling on a budget, and you stay in hostels with shared bathrooms, you want to avoid walking around barefoot so this is the perfect moment to use your flip flops. We go back to the Skechers brand as we are using their Sandals and they are just great.
You can also use them when going to the beach, short walk, etc, trust us you need at least one pair of flip flops or sandals.
3. Choose the right clothes
Another hard one, because it again depends on the travel destination and what kind of weather is going to be there.
In general, we will share what we took on our backpacking trip for one year and you can adjust it according to your destination and length.
* 5 shirts with quick-dry technology
* 2 pair of waterproof pants convertible to shorts or 1 pair of pants/1 leggings for women
* 3 outdoor shorts/1 skirt for women
* 6 pieces of underwear and socks/2 sport bras
* 2 jumpers/pullover to keep you warm
* 1 jacket fully waterproof and windproof
* 1 hat, gloves
*1 neck warmer or scarf
Not a lot right?
As we mentioned you will need the same amount of clothes for one week or for one year, you just wash it when needed.
Special Tip: Get Packing cubes, its totally must-have travelling gadget. You can easily organize your clothes, keep it clean and it will occupy less space in your backpack. We use Eagle Creek Packing cubes as they are probably the best at the market, we love them!
4. Choose the right Travel gadgets
There are a few travel gadgets we never travel without.
ELECTRONICS
Portable Charger – when you are travelling for some time, you will find a portable charger as a must-have, you never know when you will be able to charge your phone and other devices.
World Adapter– definitely a great travel gadget when you travel the world or visiting different continents.
External Hard drive– we take many photos and videos and we need space for it. We use the external hard drive to download our photos and videos during our trip so we can have unlimited space to take even more photos.
SD Memory card– we have extra SD 128GB memory cards to add additional memory to our devices when travelling.
PC or iPad- we use iPad as it is smaller and less heavy than PC, with an extra wireless keyboard which is more convenient when working on our blog.
Adaptor for Ipad– we travel with iPad however we use Android phones, so to make sure we can connect our phones with iPad, we use an adaptor that also works for USB.
GoPro or Camera– we use GoPro HERO4 which connects with wifi and you can make videos under the water, great travel gadget if you like an adventure.
Electronic Accessories Organizer – During our trips, we try to have everything organized as much as possible and in this organizer we keep all our cables, chargers and power banks.
Headphones-it is a classic tip but absolutely necessary
TRAVEL GADGETS
Padlocks– definitely recommended, we use them on a daily basis to secure our backs when travelling, we use TSA padlocks specialized for TSA airport screeners which allow inspecting your luggage without damaging the locks.
Knife-it is always useful travel gadget especially with more functions, we use a classic Swiss knife which you can also use to open a bottle of wine on the road.
Travel pillow-a great thing to have when travelling, we have two types, both inflammable, one is classic neck pillow for planes and another one is camping pillow which we use for night trains or busses, amazing gadget!
Foldable backpack-we though we are not going to use it a lot, but it is super useful when you go to visit the city and you just want to carry water and extra jacket with you.
Earplugs- sleeping in transports and sharing room in hostels will teach you that earplugs are your best friend.
Compression socks– it might not be so cool as other travel gadgets but for long-distance trips it is necessary, it helps relieve the pain and promote blood circulation and oxygen flow.
Head Lamp– you might think that you can use your phone with the light however headlamp is a great help when you want to read in a shared bedroom without disturbing others.
Sleeping Back – We believe that sleeping back is a MUST especially for long term trips. We carefully chose Cumulus Lite Line 300 sleeping back which is ultra-light (about 600g) filled with goose down up to 0°C. Nothing better than keeping you warm during your trips.
Collapsible Water bottle – a perfect travel gadget for your trips. No need for plastic bottles and it fits everywhere.
Water filter – There are many filters on the market but in our opinion, the best one and the one we use is the Sawyer Filtration system. It might be a bit more expensive but it is definitely worth the investment. You can stop buying plastic bottles and use them to filter tap water anywhere. This way you get your money back as you don’t buy water at all. Totally recommended!
Travel Gadgets to Keep safe your belongings
Many people ask us how we safe our belongings, passports, money, and documents during our trips. There are few travel gadgets that might help you to secure your belongings.
Money Belt -it’s very common to use, however, it is also a well-known gadget, so we still occasionally use it when we travel on a plane.
Travel security belt– a great thing to have and more difficult to spot, we usually keep copies of our passports and some extra cash.
Secret pocket–this is probably our top, pocket inside of your pants, very hard to steal and spot, they will have to steal your pants. It is a perfect place to keep your passport and some main credit cards.
Scarf with hidden pocket– we personally don’t have it, but we heard that many travelers use it and they really like it, so we might get it soon.
Travel insurance
Some people think that they don’t need travel insurance. Yes, you need it and we don’t travel anywhere without it.
For our world trip, we use World Nomads as they are the best for travelers and explorers.
For our one year trip, we paid over 1000 EUR with unlimited medical coverage which is a great deal. So far we did not use it, and hopefully, we won’t have to but you should always travel with insurance.

Organizar la maleta- amor o odio
Bueno, hay personas que odian empacar y generalmente preparan su equipaje en el último minuto como la noche anterior. También hay personas a las que les encanta empacar y organizan todo semanas antes del viaje.
Nosotros estamos en algún lugar en el medio y depende mucho de a dónde vamos. Cuando íbamos a viajar durante tres semanas en Vietnam, preparamos el equipaje unos días antes de nuestro vuelo. Sin embargo cuando íbamos a viajar por el mundo, comenzamos a prepararnos y empacar semanas antes de nuestro primer vuelo.
Por supuesto, no puedes comparar las vacaciones durante unas semanas como dar la vuelta al mundo. Es obvio que para viajes más largos, siempre necesitarás más preparación y posiblemente una lista de verificación de viaje.
En general, también aprendimos a empacar a lo largo de los años. Al principio, cargamos tantas cosas que nunca usamos, y paso a paso aprendimos cómo empacar y transportar adecuadamente solo las cosas que realmente necesitamos.
En esta publicación, preparamos nuestra lista de como organizar la mochilla, lo que llevamos con nosotros a todas partes, independientemente de la duración del viaje.
Sí, os puedo decir una cosa, después de un tiempo, nos dimos cuenta de que no hay diferencia entre preparar la mochila para una semana o unos pocos meses.
Nuestra lista verificada de lo que tendrías que llevar.
1. Elige la mochila adecuada
Lo único que debes elegir con cuidado es tu mochila o maleta.
Cuando viajamos por Europa durante un largo fin de semana, definitivamente vamos con una pequeña maleta. Esta será la opción obvia, ya que es el equipaje perfecto para un viaje corto y no tienes que pagar una tarifa adicional al volar.
Por otro lado, cuando fuimos a Vietnam durante tres semanas, una maleta pequeña no era la mejor idea. Elegimos una mochila ya que sabíamos anteriormente que viajaremos usando diferentes transportes y llevar una maleta con ruedas no era muy conveniente.
Para nuestro viaje alrededor del mundo, estamos utilizando Regatta Survivor Backpack, que resultó ser la mejor opción para nosotros. Mochila muy versátil y duradera con funda impermeable.
Consejo adicional: También estamos usando la cubierta de avión/transporte, para que puedas guardar tu mochila dentro cuando viajas. Es algo increíble, protege tu equipaje, lo mantiene limpio y puedes agregar un candado para cerrar todo, por lo que es más difícil abrirlo.
También utilizamos candados TSA especializados para inspectores de aeropuertos TSA que permiten inspeccionar su equipaje sin dañar las cerraduras.
2. Elige los zapatos correctos
Encontrar los zapatos correctos para viajar por el mundo,sí , ese es la parte difícil. Probamos muchos tipos diferentes de zapatos, y nos dimos cuenta de que, en general, necesitamos 3 pares de zapatos para cada viaje.
Zapatos para caminar: zapatos que necesitarás casi todos los días y deben ser muy cómodos. Utilizamos Skechers con la plantilla de espuma (este tipo para mujeres) que proporciona una gran comodidad.
Zapatos de senderismo: todavía no estamos unidos en este tema, probamos algunos tipos diferentes de zapatos de senderismo, pero en general, recomendaríamos los zapatos de senderismo Salomon ya que tenemos una buena experiencia con ellos.
Chanclas, sandalias, sí, las necesitarás ¿por qué? Si viajas con un presupuesto limitado y te quedas en albergues con baños compartidos, debes evitar caminar descalzo, por lo que este es el momento perfecto para usar tus chanclas. Volvemos a la marca Skechers ya que estamos usando sus sandalias y son simplemente geniales.
También puede usarlos cuando vayas a la playa, caminatas cortas, etc., confíe en nosotros, necesitas al menos un par de chanclas o sandalias.
3. Elige la ropa adecuada
Otra parte difícil, porque nuevamente depende del destino del viaje y qué tipo de clima va a estar allí.
En general, compartiremos lo que tomamos en nuestro viaje de mochilero durante un año y puedes ajustarlo de acuerdo con tu destino y duración.
* 5 camisas con tecnología de secado rápido
* 2 pares de pantalones impermeables convertibles en pantalones cortos o 1 par de pantalones / 1 leggings para mujeres
* 3 pantalones cortos / 1 falda para mujer
* 6 piezas de ropa interior y calcetines / 2 sujetadores deportivos para mujeres (mejor que los sujetadores normales
* 2 cazadoras / jersey para mantenerte caliente
* 1 chaqueta totalmente impermeable y a prueba de viento
* 1 gorro, 1 par de guantes
* 1 calentador de cuello o bufanda
No mucho verdad?
Como mencionamos, necesitarás la misma cantidad de ropa durante una semana o durante un año, simplemente la tienes que lavar cuando sea necesario.
Consejo especial: Obtenga cubos de embalaje, es un gadget de viaje totalmente imprescindible. Puedes organizar fácilmente tu ropa, mantenerla limpia y ocupará menos espacio en tu mochila. Usamos los cubos Eagle Creek Packing, ya que probablemente sean los mejores del mercado, ¡nos encantan!
4. Elige los gadgets de viaje adecuados
Hay algunos artilugios de viaje sin los que nunca viajamos.
ELECTRÓNICA
Cargador portátil: cuando viajas por un tiempo, encontrarás un cargador portátil como algo imprescindible, nunca se sabe cuándo no podrás cargar tu teléfono y otros dispositivos.
Adaptador Universal: sin duda, un excelente dispositivo de viaje cuando viajas por el mundo o visitas diferentes continentes.
Disco duro externo: tomamos muchas fotos y videos y necesitamos espacio para ello. Usamos el disco duro externo para descargar nuestras fotos y videos durante nuestro viaje para que podamos tener espacio ilimitado para tomar aún más fotos.
Tarjeta de memoria SD: tenemos tarjetas de memoria SD de 128 GB adicionales para agregar memoria adicional a nuestros dispositivos cuando viajamos.
PC o iPad: utilizamos iPad, ya que es más pequeño y menos pesado que la PC, con un teclado inalámbrico adicional que es más conveniente cuando trabajamos en nuestro blog.
Adaptador para iPad: viajamos con iPad, sin embargo, usamos teléfonos Android, por lo que para asegurarnos de que podemos conectar nuestros teléfonos con iPad, utilizamos un adaptador que también funciona para USB.

GADGETS DE VIAJE
Candados: definitivamente recomendado, los usamos a diario para asegurar nuestras espaldas cuando viajamos, utilizamos candados TSA especializados para inspectores de aeropuertos TSA que permiten inspeccionar su equipaje sin dañar las cerraduras.
Cuchillo Multiuso: siempre es un gadget de viaje útil, especialmente con más funciones, utilizamos un cuchillo suizo clásico que también se puede usar para abrir una botella de vino en el camino.
Almohadas de viaje: una gran cosa para tener cuando viaja, tenemos dos tipos, ambos inflamables, uno es una clásica almohada para el cuello para aviones y otra es una almohada para acampar que usamos para trenes nocturnos o autobuses, ¡un gadget increíble!
Mochila plegable: pensamos que no la vamos a usar mucho, pero es muy útil cuando vas a visitar la ciudad y solo quieres llevar agua y una chaqueta extra.
Tapones para los oídos: dormir en transportes y compartir habitación en albergues te enseñará que los tapones para los oídos son tu mejor amigo.
Calcetines de compresión: puede que no sea tan genial como otros dispositivos de viaje, pero para viajes de larga distancia es necesario, ayuda a aliviar el dolor y promueve la circulación sanguínea y el flujo de oxígeno.
Lámpara portátil: puedes pensar que puedes usar la luz de tu teléfono, sin embargo, una lámpara portátil es una gran ayuda cuando deseas leer en un dormitorio compartido sin molestar a los demás.
Gadgets de viaje para mantener a salvo tu pertenencias

Para nuestro viaje de un año, pagamos más de 1000 EUR con cobertura médica ilimitada, lo cual es una gran oferta. Hasta ahora no lo usamos y, con suerte, no tendremos que hacerlo, pero siempre debes viajar con un seguro.
